Where to train this Wisteria leader stem on railings

Hello, I'm looking for advice on where to train a new whippy stem on my potted Wisteria, onto some railings.

I'm not sure if I'm best to try and train this leader at the top, middle or bottom of these railings. The railings themselves are approx. 100cm high. I could only find information on training against wires on much larger walls.

I'd been growing this Wisteria from a £5 salvage, then have moved into a courtyard garden so now it's in a lovely (and very large) pot. Thanks to some horrible scaffolders, 50% of the plant was snapped off (and they threw it away to try and hide it). But despite a nasty tear, this lovely new growth has shot out and means I can grow it into the railings :)

All advice is welcome, thank you.
James

I personally go to the top of the fence easier to attach . You probably could train a lower stem from a off shoot in future .

I'd do the opposite  train it along the bottom rail as new laterals will grow from this. BUT may I ask if you are renting as growing something as vigorous as wisteria on  railings such as those could potentially become a problem. Wisteria just does not know when to stop growing and quite easily can engulf buildings,  roofs or windows.
This example demonstrates the thickness and strength of the branches!

I started mine off from the bottom as well.

  • Thank you all - I think I will do it from the bottom. I own the property so don't need to worry about future size, and the pot will constrain this to a large degree as well.
