Common ragweed

didywdidyw Posts: 3,573
Three new plants popped up in my bed.  I was hoping they would turn out to be something useful as they look so healthy and lush. But my investigations show them to be common ragweed.  So I won't 'wait and see if it flowers' as its pollen is a harmful allergen apparently.  Shame they have to come out.  I rather liked them.

Why take it out if you like it?

I might leave it a bit @Balgay.Hill and whip them out at the first sign of flowering.

Plants are plants. There was a beautiful giant hogweed next to my garden last year, and i never reported it to the council for removing.
Our gardens are for plants that we like.  :)

Ragweed has a very potent pollen causing severe allergies

Hogweed has sap that can be very painful on the skin

Both of these plants are not native and very invasive

Giant hogweed is potentially problematic, not the ordinary one  :)
I don't know ragweed, so looked it up. The flowers aren't particularly noticeable.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

To clarify … Giant Hogweed Heracleum mantegazzianum is the non native and dangerous plant.

Common Hogweed Heracleum sphondylium is a UK native plant, not dangerous, and an important wildlife resource.
