Tulips

Is there any way to work out colours in new tulip bulbs ? I ordered an amount of red and an amount of white bulbs ,and when they came ,the company had just put them all in together ! I don’t want to end up with all white at one end and all red at the other ……..if you see what I mean .🤷‍♀️

  • That sounds mad! Did the company make a mistake in not separating the red from the white tulips?

I don't think there is, until they flower. If one of the varieties has distinctive leaves (e.g. if the red one is "Red Riding Hood" which has stripy leaves) you might be able to tell before the flowers open, but probably not from the dry bulbs.
The best approach might be to either just plant them and be prepared to carefully lift and move some when you can see the flower colours, to to plant them in small-ish pots (maybe three or so to a pot) then arrange and plant them when you can see the colour of the flower buds.

I’d ask for replacement bulbs or a refund.  Or, give them a really good mix and you will reduce the likelihood of getting two distinct blocks of colour.

If they were bought as two separate items then asking for replacements in separate packs would be reasonable, but if they were bought as a mixed collection (like these) then I wouldn't be surprised if they came as one pack.
Edit: of course in the latter case you could offer the supplier some polite feedback, and ask them how you should ensure an even mix of the two colours when you plant them.

Thank you all for your posts . I hoped there would be a way to tell ,never mind as has been suggested I’ll mix them well and hope for the best .
