Stag beetle larva

I have been emptying flower pots and in every one there have been lots of stag beetle larva. Pots were filled with new compost before planting with annuals, where are these larva coming from as I have read on the internet that they live on rotten wood! Curious!

They are more likely to be Cockchafer grubs if they are in your flower pots, we always have them in ours when we go to change the soil.

I have just looked at picture of cockchafer grubs and yes they could be those. Mystery solved. Thank you.
