We inherited a similar (leylandii) hedge but much neglected one many years ago and it took me a couple of years of patience to get it back into shape and looking reasonable.
I planted a small row of Yew in front of it, knowing it would be hindered by the original. But Taxus (Yew) is a marvelous thing that will grow from old wood and sprout all over the trunks and branches. So finally this year the old will be taken out and the Yew will be able to do its glorious thing.
We really like the hedge so will try to rescue it. Thanks for your comments, I will post a photo to show progress and if it isn't successful will rethink.
The biggest problem will probably be avoiding cutting off anything you do manage to spread over the top. Fingers crossed you can get a solution though. The alternative is to paint the top green
