New turf

I have had high quality turf laid on top of topsoil 5 weeks ago. There are quite a lot of weeds growing. I have cut the grass twice so far on a high setting. Can I use a weed killer?

Was it sold as 'meadow turf'?  If not I would question whether it's 'high quality turf' if there are already quite a lot of weeds growing.
  • No it wasn’t sold as meadow turf. The man that delivered it told me it was top quality but I guess he would say that.
  • Are you able to easily pull the weeds out - a nuisance but may be worth looking at.
Just a thought but can you  ID the weeds ?   Some such as daisies or clover actually make a lawn look more attractive both to the eye and to insect life.
5 weeks on,  don't dismiss the possibility that weed seeds have blown in from elsewhere and have found your new grass suitable.

  • You can buy a weed killer specifically to use on grass. It works. I do not have a single weed on my lawn.
  • @marian.goord5651214 DO NOT use weedkiller on a “new” lawn. You will do more damage than good. Because the lawn is only 5 weeks old the weeds should be shallow rooted so they should come out easily.  I would go over the lawn and carefully dig them out.  A ‘High Quality’ turf should not contain weeds.  So unless weed seeds have blown onto it from an adjacent lawn I doubt it is high quality.

I seeded my lawn (golf green) beginning of July and I have spot treated weeds recently with no problems at all.
I never knew retirement would be so busy.
