Mystery object

Someone gave me a pile of pots and this object

Anyone know what it is?

It looks a bit like one of those things you put in the top of downpipes to stop debris getting washed down and blocking it.
Is it too big for that though?

    Wow thanks!
It was driving me nuts trying to work out what it was

I would never have thought it was anything to do with drains 👍👍

    Not drains,  gutters.

Won't be using it I thought it was something connected to flowers and plants 👍

It has a loose connection - it stops the water you use for the plants from getting silted up...

It's very much connected. If you live in a very dry part of the country where water for plants is in short supply, or there's hosepipe bans, and have a water butt connected to a down pipe.
In addition to @StephenSouthwest 's comment, it helps to prevent that down pipe from being blocked with debris, and water possibly spilling out the guttering, and being wasted, instead of going down the pipe into the water butt.  :)

  • Depending how wide it is, I agree with fairygirl, if is a bit too big to fit a down pipe then my money is on a chimney cowl.

It’s adjustable so should fit any downpipe.
We have the very sophisticated bit of curled up chicken wire poked in our downpipes.

I don’t  think a plastic cowl would last long,  unless you don’t use the fireplace anymore.
