Why? Because I fancy a tree at the end of the row and start of the ramp. One of those trees with a long trunk and a ball of leaves at the top. I was thinking if I bought it young , with a small, if any, trunk, it would be fun to see it gat taller. I imagine the root will need lots of care.
You'll have to choose carefully for a tree, and yes - in that size of container, any tree will need a lot of attention after a while.
Just be aware that some of the info on the post by peterdav is incorrect. Perhaps they aren't in the UK. Platycodon isn't evergreen, as it's a herbaceous perennial, so it would only retain foliage in the mildest of conditions. Gaultherias don't flower in autumn - they flower in spring, and are mainly grown for their berries at this time of year. Some heucheras may have flowers lingering on into early autumn, and the same for the balloon flower, but they aren't regarded as autumn flowering.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I have decided that size of container would be too small so have returned one - down to three now
The tree I would like would be what I call a poodle tree. I have never seen them when the are small and short trunked but they must start low lol. Anyway thats for next year, so plenty of time to research while my wife is away for a couple of months. Actually, that would be a good time to go on a gardening course somewhere nice, must have a search around but probably wrong time of year. Kew??
I can't quite tell what's in there - Euonymus, spirea and winter pansies/violas?
I think they look good and will be fine for this winter, but the shrubs will outgrow the pots and will fill a pot each by this time next year, or bigger pots so they can have more space each, so maybe in spring when the pansies/violas have gone over you could separate them out.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Three rather than five as it will be less to have to look after
You could always add another two later.
