Roses

I have some roses that have been in pots, some for several years.  Most years I top dress them and feed them well, but they are now not doing well at all.  i think they have been in pots for too long and need to go into the garden.  So plan to create a small rose bed with them, there are four altogether.

My question is when is the best time to move them from their pots into the garden.  Would it be better to move them when I cut them down a third in the autumn or in the spring.    I would have thought that spring would be best as the bed I am planning to move them to can get waterlogged in the winter.  I garden on heavy clay but I have dug in lots of compost, clay breaker and other stuff to loosen the soil in this bed which is part full sun and part shady.

Any advise would be very welcome please.

Hello @Novice23,  the general advice is to move them when they are dormant and all the leaves have dropped off during the winter.

However, if your plot tends to get waterlogged it might be better to wait until early spring, just before new growth begins.

Thanks for that Lizzie27, I will see how the weather goes, as it is still quite warm here so soil is OK.
