Will heavily pruning a Cherry laurel tree cause its roots to grow even more?

Hello all,

I have a large cherry laurel tree (about 5-6m tall, 3-4m wide) in the front garden and we want to drastically cut it back as it's blocking the sun, and has gone un-pruned for a few years. The roots are apparently close to some drains under the front garden. We've been told that cutting it back heavily will cause the tree to go 'into shock' and lots more roots to grow (which we want to avoid). Is this true? Will the roots have a growth spurt and cause damage to drains? Is there any way we can reduce the size of the tree without causing the roots issue?

Thanks everyone for your help. It's a lovely tree and I don't quite feel ready to cut it down and replace it.

Does it have a nice shape now, if not then maybe it is time for it to go. At 6 metres tall it is a mature tree with a fully developed root system. If it was going to be a problem with the drains it would be doing so already. Cutting back will reduce the stress on the roots so I am not sure it will cause a big increase in root growth. Laurels are tough and can take heavy pruning so you should be able to re-size and re-shape it successfully.
  • Thank you for your comment. It looks quite attractive now, we will try and prune it back so it keeps a similar shape.
