    Could be @scroggin
I recall the caterpillars looped themselves as they lurched forward as they only seemed to have legs at the front and back.
I think depression rather than hole would be more accurate on my toms.

I noticed this tomato in my greenhouse just now, with a very satisfied snail lurking under an adjacent leaf- there was a small trail of excrement next to the hole, but it fell off.

  • Thanks guys for your continued feedback.

I really don't think it is slugs or snails as I have not seen a single sighting of either in the GH in months. For them to do such widespread damage and for me to not see any slugs or snails would be somewhat unusual.

If I manage to get any photos of the culprits residing in the tomatoes or peppers I will add them to this exchange. Otherwise, I fear it is going to remain a mystery.

  • In a greenhouse I also would not suspect slugs, snail perhaps, but they would need to hide. From the damage it looks to me more like hornworm damage. Now many years ago in the north east I spotted my first hummingbird hawk-moth (caterpillar = hornworm). In recent years here in Yorkshire I've seen them in the garden at least twice in the last 3 summers. I would not expect them to breed here, but they may very well be now doing so in the south of England. I have seen the damage they can do to toms, aubergine and peppers. It starts as a small beast but gets pretty big...

Yorkshire, ex Italy and North East coast. Growing too old for it!
  • I cut open the pepper in the attached images and footage yesterday and the the small whiteish grub crawled out.
I don't know if this helps at all in identifying the culprit??!!
