What are these marks on apples?

Does anyone know what these marks on my apples are caused by?
It’s from a fan trained tree,  and I’m wondering if it is worth protecting the fruit with netting next year.

    Have you a photo?
  • Sorry, not sure why these photos weren’t showing on the original post
  • I guess these are eaters, @Magpie-Maiden
Similar marking on many of our apples, and I've had to cut them up, stew and bottle them.
I still have lots to do.
If they are caused by codling moth, then I'm assuming you'd need fine netting.
Have you cut any of them open to see how those markings affect the inside? It's worth a try.
  • If it IS codling moth, then underplanting the trees with nasturtiums may help. They do have a tendency to spread. Rapidly!!

If it is codling moth then you'll see a 'tunnel' inside the apple where the caterpillar has eaten its way out.
I get quite a few codling moth damaged apples on my trees - next year I'm going to use a pheromone trap. A neighbour uses one every year and only gets a few damaged apples a year and he has about 12 apple trees.

If there's no tunnel, then it's likely to be birds having a peck.
