Geranium Piet White

KmehKmeh Posts: 173
Hello,

I bought a geranium from a local nursery that specialises in rare plants. It is apparently a geranium that was bred by Piet Oudolf - hence it’s name Piet white.

I can’t find anything online about it - so wondering if it goes by another name? Anyone heard of it before?

Thanks

  • @Kmeh Is it a hardy Geranium? I personally would have thought so as it would be in keeping with his planting schemes. There are plants named after his wife Anja but I am not aware of this one. If he did indeed name it I would think it would have Plant Breeders Rights so it would not go under another name.
There is a fee I believe for any company to sell plants covered by PBR which makes it difficult for small nurseries to cover costs.
There are PBR lists on line but I have found it impossible to search due to the high number of plants listed.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

This is Piet Oudolfs top 100 plants. Not a white geranium amongst them. That not to say he didn't have a white geranium. He used to be a nurseryman but closed the nursery and went to designing 15 years ago.

Also a plant list for a design he did in Holland.

Yes it’s a hardy geranium and funnily enough we were talking about PBR in relation to other geraniums they have, maybe even this one (can’t remember!). We were trying to find a geranium with some specific attributes- I ended up purchasing this one as apparently people just love it when it’s in bloom!

I've never heard of it, so disappeared down a rabbit hole of Piet Oudolf gardens, plant lists etc. Even a search for the various plants that he has bred didn't produce any results.

The only thing l can suggest is you contact the nursery and see if they can come up with any more information , or if you are on Instagram you can contact him through that.

I'm wondering if someone maybe acquired a plant from one of his gardens some years ago and over the years it took the name Piet's white.

thanks @fidgetbones - I’ve read both those pages too - left me scratching my head more!
  • Strangly enough I do have a White Hardy Geranium discovered in a friends garden it does have PBR G Mary Mottram of local interest here, I have propagated it many times for local gardeners  to enjoy.
I think Mary Mottram had a nursery in Devon and Joan Grout who discovered it named it after her.

Mystery solved - original plant purchased from his nursery 20 plus years ago. Maybe the actual name lost or perhaps conveniently forgotten! Similar to Kashmir Green and Kashmir White.

    Thank you for all help!
  • @Kmeh Thankyou for the update I did wonder what it might look like.

  • I hope Piet Oudolf doesn’t take it amiss if he finds out it’s being sold under his name … the nursery might find themselves open to legal action … I’d take advice if I were them.
