Bamboo Orchid

A friend gave me some roots/cuttings of a Bamboo Orchid, I potted these up in the correct compost, and after a long time these little shot/roots are appearing, not sure what to do, do I just leave them or does each shoot need potting up, would appreciate any help or advice.

  • Not sure what a bamboo orchid is. I think it is a dendrobium orchid  No leave all alone and allow the  plant to sort itself out. keep misting it and watering when the compost is dry but if you can use rain water.
  • Thank you so much, have 'Google' the dendrobium orchid and that is the one I have, learnt a lot, thanks again,
  • @widgetwilk ann   Dendrobiums don't mind being a bit congested so if you only have those 2 shoots, leave them in the same pot but cover the roots.  You can see a decent one beginning to shoot on the LH side stem.
They also benefit from a spell of cold ( not frost/freezing tho ) to help promote future flowering.
You may have to wait a year or so before they are mature enough to flower but when they do,  which is normally March/April time, the long sprays are beautifully scented, particularly on the white flowered one.
Once mature, you often get new ones which appear at the top of the stems and if they have roots showing, you can then ease them off and pot up to make new plants.
  • Thanks for that, yes that does look a nice shoot on the left, they were in greenhouse all summer but have brought them indoors now, hope I can wait for the flowers.
  • Arundina graminifolia .....common name bamboo orchid.
    Only seen them growing abroad.
Will leave growing advice to those in the know.

  • Interesting @Silver surfer but I don't think that is the same plant as the OP's which I am fairly certain is a Dendrobiium . Common enough from Orchid nurseries in the UK or at least they were - I guess I've had mine for over 20 years.
The Arundaria in your pics is certainly more "wispier" for want of a better word and does resemble bamboo growth - hence the name presumably.
IME, the Dendrobium tend to be sturdy rather than wispy and the flowers are smaller but of course only grown as house plants here in the UK.
I guess that is often the problem with common names - they don't always help much  ;)

  • Think you could be right philippasmith, am sure my friend who gave me the cuttings one is white, that one looks nice Silver Surfer
  • Let's hope we are right @widgetwilk ann.  There is a pink flowered Dendrobium but try as I might, it never seems as healthy or floriferous as the white.
If you don't have any luck with your friends cutting, then I have plenty here which you will be welcome to.
  • Found this photo of my friends Orchid where these cutting came from.
