If the tree is otherwise healthy, it may just have been stressed during the summer - too much sun can cause it. Plums are very sappy trees, so they can leak quite easily. That it has appeared on some split bark may indicate something more serious, but not not something I have much experience of. I recall my plum trees (Victoria and Czar - now long gone) did it, as did the plums themselves.

Thanks @Pete.8i will keep an eye on it. The tree has been here for as long as we have lived here so at least 25 years. Not sure if they are long lived tree or not.
