Advice on Acer tree

I recently got this tree from someone who was struggling to take care of it. It’s in quite bad shape and I just wanted some advice on what I should do to it now and how to protect it in winter. I have fed it with an ericaceous feed but that's about it. I was thinking not to remove the dead wood yet until winter to prevent sap leaking?
Thanks!

No need to feed at this time, tree is about to go dormant.
I would cut out the dead wood between Dec. and early Feb., before the sap starts to rise.
I think you could end up with a very nice Acer.
How can you lie there and think of England

I’m just hoping it will make it through winter, is it worth wrapping the tub with anything? Mulch on top?
It was such a beautiful Acer a few years ago just hoping it will pull itself through!
  • You could start to remove the obviously dead  branches now as no sap will come from them. You can even cut into small stems of live wood now as the tree is preparing to shut down as @punkdoc says, so also will not bleed sap.  Do the main structural work in winter as said previously.  I would consider either potting it on,  or at least repotting it with fresh soil based compost in spring,  just as you see the buds swelling and beginning to break.
