Broken dahlias

borgadrborgadr Posts: 718
A couplof my dahlias snapped in the storms this week.  I had to cut them back, almost to the ground.  With virtually no plant feeding the tuber this autumn, are they likely to perform next year or am I better advised to discard the tubers and start again with new ones next year?

They might reshoot, you never know. If not, I would just think of it as "putting the tubers to bed early". You should be fine. If we had got an early frost, they would have had it by now anyway.

You would be better lifting those tubers now.

Yes, I think I'll pack them away this weekend, then hope for the best.

If you’re going to lift them and pack them away,  make sure that they are completely dry before you store them or they will rot.

Yes. Just not used to digging them out this early. I normally wait for the first frosts, then give up waiting in November because I need the pots for my tulips.

We had a freezing hailstorm in Bedfordshire yesterday. Going to be lifting my dahlias earlier this year too
