Yellow Flower problem in the garden

Hello,
We have a patch of yellow flowers with which the stalks grow up through the spring and flower yellow in summer. They turn brown in the autumn and we either cut them back to ground level in the autumn around October time or in the early spring (March) before they grow up again. This year though, although they flowered in the summer, there was grass growing up between the stalks as they grew upwards through the spring. Does anyone know the name of this yellow flower stalk and have any advice as to what we could do and when to kill off the grass growing up between the stalks without impacting on the health of the yellow flower stalks please? The photo below shows what it has looked like in previous years when in flower when there was no grass between the stalks.

The next photo below shows what it looks like now (22nd September). It has not grown as tall this year but now has finished flowering but the photo shows the grass blades between the stalks.

It looks like yellow loosestrife, one of the Lysimachias. I think you just need to weed and mulch the bed.

@matt_a_sampsonBq6g16pH I think it is Lysimachia too. The only successful way to clear the grass is to lift split and tease out the grass. Improve the soil with some compost and replant. fI dry over the next few weeks water until settled. If the grass has grown in from the lawn keeping the lawn edge cut back regularly will stop it happening in future.
It is also possible that it is couch grass which can be a real problem to clear. If you look on the RHS website it shows pictures of the roots, just a tiny piece left in the ground can regrow.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • Looks like Lysimachia punctata...common name yellow loosestrife.
    Perthshire. SCOTLAND .
  • Beware the Lysimachia, it is a thug! I am on a mission to remove it in my garden but still keep finding new ones in odd corners. The flowers are jolly it's true, and I still permit a couple of small patches where I have nothing better, but it is hard to control. I bet if you dug that whole patch over and removed all the grass and plants there would still be some that came up the next year!
