Why aren't these trees regrowing after topping?

  Thanks so much for everyone's thoughts, we hugely appreciate it! 🙏🙏🙏 For those who were wondering, yes it was a proper tree surgeon and sadly they didn't advise us on this

  You will still get growth from the green ends.  Thes will turn upwards, but it will take decades to look any good.

   location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

  It also depends on what you asked them [tree surgeons] to do. They wouldn't be obliged to tell you they wouldn't regrow from that if you just said they were too big and you wanted them topped, or to have a certain amount removed from the main trunks. 

  It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
