Beech Nuts

Hi there, am I right in believing that beech nuts are ok in borders? I understand they will take some time to decompose, but would it be ok to mulch on top of them, rather than removing them all first?  Thanks

You may find that you have dozens of trees growing from them. Yes, they do take years to decompose and they are painful to kneel on. I removed 20 compost sized bags of them from our garden last year as I got fed up with them. Basically it is up to you.
  • Hi @Janie B,

We have too very large beech trees here, and loads of the nuts drop onto borders.
I just leave them as they are organic matter, and will be incorporated into the soil eventually. Meantime, they are acting as a mulch along with leaves etc.

I do get some volunteer seedlings, but they are easily spotted and pulled up.
A few years back a friend potted a dozen or so up. Once they were a reasonable size she used them to plug gaps in her hedge.
