Cherry Problems

Hello - looking for some advice on our ornamental cherry tree. Has been sickly all year, seemed to start in the very hot weather last summer. After several years of wonderful blossom this year we pretty much had zero. 

The brown leaves didn’t drop last autumn and I pruned it quite heavily earlier this year, leaves have gone brown again. 

Any advice gratefully received!

    When did you prune it this year? That can be detrimental if done at the wrong time.
    If it was struggling last  year in dry conditions, and hasn't come back well this year, it may not recover at all though. Was there no green growth this year in spring?
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
