Corkscrew Hazel Catkins in September(?)

Hi all,
Today (16th of September) I've just spotted some catkins on my corkscrew hazel. My understanding was that they typically form in Spring ? Is that correct? And if so, what might the reason be for them to come in September? In the UK we have had a wet summer but suddenly had much warmer weather with lots of sunshine, so I wondered if that had caused it?
Do I leave them be or is there anything i need to do?

  • They begin to form in late autumn/winter then, usually in late Jan/Feb they lengthen and loosen and become covered in pollen … then the little red female flowers open … so given that this is an odd season, I’m not really surprised to see your hazel’s catkins have  begun to form. Enjoy!  I get such a happy feeling when I see hazel catkins.

The Hazels in the hedgerows round here are all well catkinned at the moment.
  • Ours that did produce hazels...the squirrels have taken the lot.
