Sept - too late to prune apple tree?

I have an espalier apple tree, and haven't had a chance to prune this summer. Is it too late to prune it in September? It has very long side shoots now!
Thanks

  • September is late summer, crossing into autumn.

From what i understand, light pruning should be ok, as long as rain is not expected. But these days, weather forecast is less reliable.

Than other people say late winter or early spring.

The more the tree is established and developed the more resilient it is to pruning.

How old is your tree ?
  • Thanks. The tree looks to be 10+ yrs old. I don't want to ruin my apple crop for next year as I should have pruned the off shoots down to fruiting spurs in high summer.

I'd prune it now - it's only just autumn and more like summer now than it was in summer!
I summer pruned my pear cordons in early August, but new growth has appeared. I'll be pruning that back today and start to tackle the mass of water shoots on one of my apple trees

  • Thanks for the feedback - sounds sensible! I'll get onto it before the rain sets in for the week!

  • I’ve only just done mine … (life and death got in the way) … as you say, prune them hard back this weekend. 👍
