Climbing rose

A couple of months ago I cut down a Zephryn douphrin rose which had been planted a long time ago. Just left a stump about 6 inches high. Since then a lot of new growth ( about 5ft) has appeared. Thought at first they were some sort of suckered but there are 5 leaves per stem. Is it possible it is the original rose coming back and if so will it ever flower again. Will try to take a photo but don't usually have much luck with photos on here. Thanks

Yes, that's 'Zephirine Drouhin'.. recovered very well indeed and it will flower next summer.  You also have new plum red shoots coming up from the base, these will also form your framework in due course and will all need tying in to the wall somehow..

Your rose will start to flower about mid May next year, but you may get a few buds appearing this autumn, or maybe not.  It's a rose that takes several years to get into a good rhythm for reblooming, and should not be cut back too much.

  • Hi Marlorena that's amazing. Can't believe how much growth it's made and was sure they were just suckers. It was planted at least 15 years ago and had got out of hand. I took the old trellis down but will get some new put up. Will also make sure I stake it well over the winter. Thank you.
  • I have seen this post this is very nice thanks for sharing it with us.

  • Just hope it flowers eventually.  Will post photo if it does.
