Sorry @plant pauper - just saw your post. Yes - both behave the same way. The leaves might drop if you're in a very dry area, and therefore the plants become stressed [never happens here!] especially if it's dry over winter, but if the hedging isn't too high, and there isn't very dry and/or windy weather, the foliage stays on. They both turn golden brown, which is why some people refer to beech as copper beech.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
