Elephant garlic

Hi Folks
I've just planted out some elephant garlic, here in the Midlands.  Am I being a bit too premature?  I really don't want to lose those lovely big cloves.  What do you think folks.

  • October is the recommended month but should be OK unless someone gives you better advice.
  • I always plant my garlic including about 30 odd elephant the last week in October or the first week in November. If you plant too early then your bed will be weeded up but other than that you should be ok. I garlic powered my bed last week to help stem the white rot. I had an email from one of the seed companies this week. Elephant garlic cloves were almost £3 each plus postage at that price I would give them a miss. I always try to save my own elephant garlic for setting but buy in the softneck in bulk.
  • I usually plant mine the end of September or the beginning of October. I can't see a few weeks making much difference to be honest. I'm also in the Midlands.
