Unhappy Fraser Fir

Hi all,

My fraser fir has suddenly started to look unhappy after the hot weather we had last week and I'm not sure if it is due to me not watering it enough or if there could be another underlying problem.

For info, it has been out in the garden in its current pot for almost a year now and was doing really well until about a week ago. I normally water it once a week and include some organic Miracle Gro with the water. A family of spiders seem to have taken a liking to it as well, though I seriously doubt that they would be having a negative effect on it.

I suspect it is due to not getting enough water, but it has had a good supply of water with the rain over the past few days and doesn't seem to be improving.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I doubt it will be happy in a small bucket/pot.  They have shallow roots that spread across just below the grounds surface,  they grow to 50’ tall and as wide.
If you plant it out it may pick up providing you have the correct soil for it.

Hello and welcome to the forum …

That is a tiny pot for a tree of that size.  I suspect it’s been short of water for some time … unfortunately it’s in the nature of fir trees to be slow to reveal the effects of drought.  Rain will have hardly penetrated the ‘umbrella’ formed by the dense lower foliage, and it’s probably in a rain shadow son that spot by the fence.

I would repot in a container twice the size of that one using
a loambased medium such as John Innes No 3 with some added grit … raise the pot so that it drains well … and give it a really good soaking and cross your fingers. I’ll cross mine too 🤞
