Cherry Bush Porthos not flowering or fruiting?

Hello, I wonder if anyone can advise?  I purchased a cherry bush porthos two years ago and planted in my allotment next to the raspberries and rhubarb.  The soil is excellent and the tree gets plenty of sun.  Although the leaves look healthy, so far it hasn’t blossomed or fruited.  Am I just being impatient; does it just need to mature, or am I doing something wrong?

In the absence of any replies, I done a bit of digging and found the following that may offer some insight..

  • Dear Pete,

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to post this.  Looks like I need to get my patient hat on then 😏

That's so often the case with gardening Liz!

A couple of general tips that may help-
There should be an area around the base of the tree about 1m across that you keep clear of weeds/grass etc this allows rain to penetrate and prevents weeds taking nutrients out of the soil.
I guess it doesn't need a stake (?) but it should otherwise look something like this at the base- (fortunately it doesn't need to be quite so neat :))

A thorough watering if it's hot and dry a couple of times a week.
In early spring a feed with a handful of a high potash fertilizer (I use Vitax Q4 for all my fruits) will encourage flowers/fruit followed by a mulch (3-4") of compost/rotted manure on top to retain moisture and gently feed your tree.

Fingers X'ed you'll soon be overwhelmed with cherries :)

  • Oh heck, thank goodness it doesn’t need to be as neat as that!  Thanks very much for the advice.  I’ll definitely feed in spring and ensure I water it.  Fingers crossed and thanks again for you help ☺️
