Hosepipe recommendation

Can anyone recommend me a hosepipe?

I'm sick of my hozelock.  It lives to form kinks, the connectors often leak, and watering takes twice as long as it should do, mostly because I'm always having to go back and un-kink it. It also frequently decides it doesn't want to unfurl itself any more meaning when I pull on it the whole unit drags itself along then topples over.  I cannot fix it to a wall because my garden is quite big, so I usually daisy-chain two of them.

It is by far the most infuriating piece of gardening kit I own.

Are they all the same?  Or can anyone recommend me a better brand?  I don't need anything fancy.  I mostly use it for watering pots (I have an awful lot of them), and occasionally some beds only if we have a long dry spell (frequent here) and if there isn't a hosepipe ban.

    I prefer gardena
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • I know exactly what you mean @borgadr. Look for an alternative with an integrated automatic hose guidance system.  Hozelock have a couple, I have the 40m length one.  It’s excellent, no kinks, easy to rewind and much better pressure than before. Expensive but worth it.  If your current hose is a few years old you should find that this Hozelock system is a much improved version of earlier products.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

  • I got a hozelock tricoflex last year. It doesn't kink on me and winds in and out no bother. The only downside is all the reinforcement that stops it kinking does add a bit of weight but I am happy with it. My mother also has the same one and she has no issues either.

I'm a fan of the expandable Hozelock hoses but they do depend on good water pressure to work at their max length and are only good for fairly small gardens. They are not hugely robust, but by god, they make life easier - they are so very light and curl back into a space the size of a shoe box. With mobility issues, they are a game changer for me.

I prefer Gardena. The connectors never leak.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

My Gardena self-retracting wall-mounted hose is one of the best gardening purchases I have made.

Thanks all for the comments.  I'll check out the newer Hozelock models as well as the Gardena.  Probably I'll give Gardena a go this time

I have a Hozelock tricoflex ultramax, the grey and yellow one, bought a couple of years ago. It kinks, but not quite as much as some others that I've had. Fortunately I didn't pay full price for it - it was on offer in Wickes at the time.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • I replaced the hoselock one on the Allotments with Gardena. I  will be doing the same at home. When I  asked at a local GC why they no longer stock hoselock   they said they  had too many complaints about HL and that sadly the  quality of HL is not what it used to be.
