Clematis cuttings

I am new to taking clematis cuttings and have followed videos and posts but there are still no roots only growth (leaves)at the axis. How long before roots appear?and do you overwinter in cold greenhouse?

It can take ages.   I've been trying for years with little success, just shrivelled cuttings to show for my efforts.

However, this year I took cuttings of my Lambton Park last spring when pruning it and 3 have not only taken but turned into thriving plants.   Previous successes were with viticella types.

As long as they're looking healthy, keep your cuttings sheltered out of strong winds and full sun and yes, in the greenhouse for winter.

Yes, keep your cuttings moist but not too wet and drowning.

Wait and see if anyone else comes along and has had better success.

  • I tried clematis cuttings at end of July this year after it stopped flowering but they never took so I am going to try again next year but take the cuttings earlier, before it flowers, and see if the younger stems take better.
  • Thanks for advice

I accidentally took cuttings of C. 'Frances Rivis' when I chopped a long stem off by mistake. I cut between nodes and put them in water, fully covering the nodes, and they took quite a while but all grew roots. I've since potted them and they're doing well.

The cuttings I took of my Lambton Park were done in the spring pruning in March so maybe those new shoots have more energy for rooting.

Nevertheless, I shall try the water method too.
