Verbena Bonariensis

Hi,

It's mid September and I have six Verbena plug plants. I'm wondering if to plant out in my garden now or should I keep them in their plastic containers until next spring.

Thanks,

Simon

I'd plant three in a sunny spot and keep the other three in pots until next spring.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Hi,

Yes that thought did occur to me.

    Thank you.

I'd certainly plant them into bigger pots, if they are not going out into the garden.
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

    S.Yorkshire/Derbyshire border
  • Yes I'll do that. Good idea.

    Thanks

@simonjosephandersonyDTbqpBK Hi are you North or South? Here in the Midlands fine at the edges of paths.
Further North they need to be under glass over winter.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • Manchester. I do already have some in my borders that come back every year. I plan to put them in this border which is sheltered and sunny.
  • I think I'll do half now and over winter the other half

I'd never plant plugs of anything at this time of year, but if you feel it'll be ok in your location, then that's fine. It might be safer to pot them all up though.
They [V. bonariensis] don't always survive here as mature plants so I take cuttings of mine. I've just done some today. They're taken from last year's cuttings which have been growing well - in pots, having been overwintered. I haven't got round to planting them out, but they're handy to slot into gaps/spaces anyway.
You could do that in future with your mature plants to save you buying more. They take very readily if you do them through summer.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • How do you take cuttings please, Fairygirl?  I’ve never had any luck and have tried digging up seedlings but they don’t seem to take well.  Mine grow fabulously where they self seed but aren’t happy if I move them.
  • I'm pretty certain they demonstrated it on last week's Gardeners World.
