Hi all, Just looking for some inspiration before I take my Mum to the garden centre. What plants are good for putting into a pot for this time of year? Something that will look good over the coming months? Thanks.
It rather depends on the size of the pot but putting that consideration to one side.......
Pansies, violas, spring flowering bulbs (dwarf daffodils look good and are less likely to keel over), primulas, some evergreens such as ivy, heuchera, euonymus, maybe a small conifer. The garden centre should be awash with the right kind of plants for the coming season.
A sedge like Carex Red Rooster or a small grass like Stipa/Nassella tenuissima surrounded by violas or winter pansies is a cheerful combination. The sedge and grass are evergreen so can be planted in the garden at a later date. Top the pot with washed pebbles or chipped slate for a smart look!
@Grays Do watch out for the small colourful Cyclamen these are often not hardy. There are always small packs of evergreens expensive but can later be added to the garden. I think the most difficult issue is getting some height.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
You can use shrubs on a temporary basis, surrounded by some of the aforementioned plants, but they'd need somewhere else to go next year. Skimmias and Pieris are useful for that, as they have flowers/berries, but are slow growing. It will largely depend on the pot sizes, and where they're being placed too.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
