  • I wouldn't bother with a pump.
What I do is leave the tap open to a slow dribble, and set an alarm on my phone to move it a couple of hours later ..
  • I will give the soaker hose a go, and if the water butt does not have enough pressure, I'll connect it up to my tap instead.

On a slightly related note, do ponds need much topping up in summer? I hope to have one soon, so could use the water butt to top that up when needed.
  • This is something I intend to look at, the thing with water, it will always take the easiest route, my plan, all theoretical at present will be the same as how we feed air into an aquarium, the holes in the pipe have the smallest nearest to the supply and larger holes nearer the extreme end of the hose.

    Try syphoning.

I keep my oleanders in large water-filled saucers that hold maybe 5l water.  During prolonged dry periods I put a narrow piece of saturated fleecy mat in tyh saucer and let the water syphon away.

Yes ponds do need topping up in summer.  I use tap water, chlorine and all; rainwater is far too valuable.

Yes. How big a pond are you planning? My very small ponds need topping up every few days when it's hot.
