I have large pots... what can I put in them?

Morning All,
I have some large pots that I would like to start using.
My friend tells me that I could plant Bay bush, Olive and red or pink Robin.

I'd like these to be quite low maintenance as I would be giving these to someone is not too mobile these days.

Any recommendations please?

Thanks
G.

  • It really depends on whether these are going to be positioned in sun or shade, and how much watering the recipient is able to do.

@9qzkhmhbnq80627 Can you give approx size of pots and are you north or south uk? Will they be in a sheltered site?
Olives are best underglass in the winter months here in the Midlands.
Bay is also tender until established.
Photinias would be fine for a while but will need to go in the ground in time.
    Welcome!

  • Our Bay is at the southern end of the garden, next to a six-foot fence. Beyond is an elderberry tree, so it gets little direct sun, unless overhead.

It has survived well for 20 years
  • A sheltered spot as @rowlandscastle444 has suggested is best for Bay.There are two neaby that are huge and have the same aspect.
A general rule of thumb is plants in pots look best when they are about two thirds the height of the pot.
Whatever is planted they will need potting on or putting in the ground in the future.
