Hedge cutting

Hi, I need some.more new hedge advice.  These are the hedges I planted in May.  I'm about to cut back the big hedge beside them and wondering if I should be cutting back the new hedges as well to encourage more bushier side growth 🤔

Would that be the correct thing to do?  Thanks for your advice in advance 😊

  • What species is your new hedge @cazsophieq2019?  It would also be helpful to know what type of soil you have, the aspect of your bed and general  location in the UK.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

  • Hi @Plantminded it's a privet hedge at the end of a North East facing back garden.

East to the right of the attached photos and North to the top of the photo.

Generally the soil is quite loose.

    Thanks for responding 🙂
  • Thank you @cazsophieq2019, it will be fine to give your new plants a light pruning now.  They already look very healthy and a good shape, so I wouldn't take too much off.  That's going to make a good solid screen in your garden!  I had over 200 feet of privet in my last garden and actually enjoyed maintaining it.  Good luck!

I think I'd trim the tops to about a foot below the fence height and shorten any branches that are growing out forwards or backwards. Sideways ones will grow into the next plant and help to form a hedge rather than a row of separate bushes. Privet responds really well to pruning so it should bush out well.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
