There are some real ‘turf pros’ on here and I’m sure they’ll pop in soon, but in the meantime I would start by removing the thatch … either with a manual spring tine lawn rake or an electric rake, depending on the size of your lawn and your energy level 😉
Also check that your lawnmower blade is nice and sharp … the ‘chewed effect’ may be down to the fact that the grass had been neglected, but there’s no harm in checking the blades.

My lawn my severely overgrown as I moved into it and was not able to do a good job clearly on cutting it.
Now the damage is done, what would you suggest me doing to restore these bad patched on my lawn? These areas are scattered all over my lawn sadly.
Can I start planting seeds immediately or there's more to it in this case?
