Winter bedding hanging baskets, ideas.

Evening all, I just wanted some advice for winter hanging baskets for the school. I got some great advice for the summer bedding baskets this year and they've been a complete success. Lots of watering, but they were real show stoppers. Sadly missed a few days watering when I was away and the staff didn't bother, but kept the majority going. I wanted to do some winter bedding baskets, but don't know if it will be worth it. They're huge hanging baskets and won't be anywhere near as good as the summer bedding as they trailer down about 5ft. But can you get trailing pansies ? I was thinking purely pansies, loads in the side walls too, but not sure if it will have the same affect. Trying to achieve a pansy ball. The baskets are 16" across or 18" I can't remember. Thanks

Whilst a pansy ball would look great, winter weather can be brutal and it might be best to have something else in the basket to give colour should the pansies succumb to cold and wet. Maybe use ivy as a base for the basket and use pansies/violas as dots of colour. Heuchera could also help add colour.
  • You could combine pansies or violas with herbs like parsley or mint to add extra interest and perhaps tasty additions to meals!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.
