GROUND COVER ALTERNATIVE TO GRASS

I have a large sloping area of ground (approx. 20 metres x 5 metres) beside a ditch around our garden, in which I would like to sow an evergreen alternative to grass (as mowing would be a problem). Can anyone suggest any plants or seeds that require little or no maintenance? Thank you

Could you give an idea of the type of soil you are on and a rough idea of what part of the country you are in.
Both these things can impact on what you might be able to grow successfully.

    clover.
  • @andrewclayden Clover lawns are becomimg very popular. Less mowing wildlife friendly but not for people in bare feet!
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

    Camomile lawn?
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

  • Do you actually want to walk on it ... or just cover the ground?  Is it sunny or shady?
  • I'm currently growing heath pearlwort (aka Irish moss) to replace my failed wildflower lawn.

I've not tried wandering about on my grass area in bare feet but I do have plenty of clover as well as other "weeds".  So purely out of interest, what is it about clover that is not good for bare feet ? Thanks.

  • Got you now @B3 so thanks.  Not the clover then - just the insects and I get enough bites every year to deal with so I'll keep my footwear on  ;)
