Thanks all for help here. I’ve stupidly composted the West Country terracotta spike that had grey pods with holes in the sides and were definitely empty then I squeezed them. Otherwise I would have taken a picture and I’m sure someone here will have been able to work out the culprit. I assumed slugs because there was slime on them and some of the holes were quite small (<5mm).
Although the lupins are got at by slugs in the spring, I think for mine it’s vine weevil and root rot because mostly they don’t emerge at all unless they are in pots. And even then it’s 50/50. It’s just dead root in the spring.
Thanks @punkdoc on the colour warning. Yes, but the optimist in me hopes I will get one plant EVEN BETTER than the original 😆
@Sazz101 I’m not so sure there would have been seeds in your Westcountry lupins, They have to be grown from cuttings. Could be wrong but usually with plants grown from stem culture they don’t produce viable seeds. They are very hardy though, so I don’t think you lost them through a cold winter, more like slugs eat them before they even popped up.

@lyn thanks I had no idea that was the case. Probably no seeds to begin with then
Has anyone grown these? What is the colour mix like? They warn that the seeds are not true to colour on the website like you said Punkdoc. The colours on the packet don’t include ‘solid’ colours like the popular Beefeater, terracotta, masterpiece. Probably because the hybrids come out on the pale side?
