Probably rose sawfly caterpillars. They start off rasping the green flesh off underneath the leaves leaving papery white spots and also chew the edges, but if left to it can totally skeletonise the leaves. The only cure is keeping a close eye on the leaves, searching for and squishing the tiny green wrigglers. No bug spray will work.

  • Hi,

This happened to my Rose early April/May.

I noticed all these bugs so I sprayed it with bug spray and then the leaves all fell off. I then started noticing with the remaining leaves a yellow/ spotting on them. I started to panic thinking I’d killed it or the bugs had.

My nan took me to a garden centre and swore by the below Rose feed:

I use this Rose feed only every so often when I water her. It keeps ANY bugs off of it and it’s now doubled in size and the leaves are greener and healthier than ever:

(Ignore my Acer though I’m trying my best to keep it alive!!)

I would 100% recommend getting some feed for it like the above because of it was some kind of bug or even like root rot or some kind of disease it picked up this feed will really help pick it back up! :)
