Fargesia Rufa

Hi,

I guess I’ll jump straight in with the issue.

I have a pair of Fargesia Rufa outside in square planters(one each) and both in the same vicinity. Both purchased at the same time and they looked around the same age/size.

Fast forward a few months and one appears to be doing very well. Foliage appears a nice shade of green and new shoots have come through and gained some height.

The other seems to be struggling, faded green foliage, lacks height in comparison and doesn’t seems to have had other shoots come through from the soil. Although its current stalks do seem to have been sprouting at the top.

I’d really appreciate any advice on how to help the little one flourish. As I’m a complete novice and a little confused as to why one would be doing so well with the other sadly not.

Thank you for taking the time to read my plea for help.

  • Hi, a comparison picture might help diagnose any reason for the difference. I grow this species and it can take a while to get going, so perhaps one of your plants was more recently divided by the supplier or simply doesn't have the same root system yet to thrive.
It's sounds silly but even plants right next to each other can behave differently because one might shelter the other from the brightest sun or block some drying winds. If these are either side of a front door for instance then one might be getting more wind than the other and one more shade. This is a plant that seems to do well in bright light but looks better with some shade.

If you can add a picture it may help to see what's going on more.

If you require a closer image of the little guy, I can share also.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m very keen to have both thrive but I feel I may not be best equipped yet to help.

I will take on board what you suggest and learn. Thanks again.
  • I have two Fargesia Nitada plants in pots.  One is looking leafy and lush, the other straggly and bare.  I've had them over 20 yrs and around this time of yr they can look a bit scruffy.  Next spring they will throw out some replacement leaves for any that have died off, and on they will go.

In short, I would not worry too much as you have only had them a short while.  As long as they don't dry out and you divide them every so often as they get too big for the pot, they should flourish.  I feed mine with slow realise pellets once a yr in spring and they really seem to benefit from this.
  • I wouldn't be overly worried by the difference looking at the pictures. These are still very young and I would just make sure they are kept moist at this point and perhaps add some mulch in the autumn and then feed them next spring (handful of blood fish and bone will do) and again early summer.
In spring/summer you should see new culms produced and I think in time the smaller one will catch up.

Wonderful news. Thank you both for the reassuring and informative comments.

I will do some more research on the suggestions you provided to understand a bit more about them.

I’m really excited to see how they progress over the coming year.

    Have a great day.
