Orchard dying

I noticed a dead tree covered in lichen, then another looking very poorly, and then a patch of lichen on another tree. I have attached photos of one bare tree, the one with a patch of the stuff on its trunk, and one small branch that crumbled from a dead tree.

  • Is the lichen a symptom indicating an underlying problem, or the cause of problem. What is the best way to keep the trees living healthier for longer?
  • Presumably this is an orchard which you've only recently got to know.  @pansyface is quite right about the lichen - it's entirely innocent, and your ailing trees have another problem...  if you can post some photos showing detail of the sickly trees, it might be possible for us to give you some idea of what's wrong and what can be done about it.   :)
