Dried Shrivelled Plums on Tree - Why?

Hello,

We have a neglected 35+ year Victoria Plum tree that we finally tried to thin out and prune as it’s had very little fruit this year.

We found a lot of dried shrivelled plums still attached to the branches. I’d have expected them to have naturally dropped off over winter/ high winds etc.

What is causing this?
Is it something to be concerned about?

Any advice, please and thank you!

  • Fungus or virus could be the answer so pull them off and get rid of them asap. Not all plums catch it thank goodness. I had a number of contaminated plums on my tree this year but still had an excellent crop.

Insect damage leads to fungal decay and it spreads from plum to adjacent plum. Thinning helps to slow spread, so long as no plums are touching another.
