Soil ready for grass seed?

I am preparing my front garden for planting grass. In the process of raking and flattening the existing soil but wondering if I should put down topsoil before continuing or will I get away without adding topsoil?
The existing soil is quite stony but all (most) of the big stones are out after tilling the soil.

If the soil is decent I don't see any point in importing new topsoil.

  • That soil looks gone to me. 👍

I didn't like to say @Dovefromabove B) It was very early in the morning though !
  • It was early indeed @AnniD … my podcast had finished and for some reason didn’t go automatically to  the next one so I had to fiddle with my phone …, thankfully I went back to sleep 🛌

  • Thanks all.
I'm struggling to flatten the soil using a roller, and dragging a heavy plank of wood over the top is having very little effect. I think raking extra soil over the top will make this easier or am I just making extra work and expense for myself?
  • To help you make sure you have a level lawn you can make yourself a drag mat using the rubber mat below, a piece of wood, some cable ties and a piece of rope.
  • That's a brilliant idea. I'll give that a go. Thanks.
  • Round here they use a tractor and pallets but same principle! 😲
