Hi big novice gardener here. We have a clematis (not sure what type) I cut it back last year as is was (or appeared to be) dried stems, but when it grew back it was very thin compared to the previous year. Have I done irreparable damage?
@richardfi Can you remember what time of year it flowered?
With Clematis that flower early you prune after flowering. For those that flower in the summer or Autumn you prune in early spring. Pruning is important with the later ones then they will shoot closer to the ground and you don't get a mass of dead stems like a bird's nest with green growth at the top. They also like lots of water if it is dry.ย
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
@richardfi With some tlc I am sure your clematis will be fine. When it flowers post a photo for an ID that way you will know when to prune in the future. Good Luck!
