Hi. Can’t anyone help me - my lawn has gone soft on foot and when I stand on it parts sink. I am also seeing patches of mud on the lawn appear.

what could this be and how can I solve it? Pictures attached

If the rainfall in your area hasn't been excessive then this could be caused by a water leak from your property or a neighbouring one, or maybe a blocked drain. It's one of those problems that isn't apparent until you start to sink when you walk over the lawn. This might help you find out if there is a leak from your property. https://theleakspecialists.co.uk/garden-leaks/

  • To much moss perhaps.
  • I'd suggest the following Scarify, aerate, feed and overseed. Then let the Autumn rain do it's work

If drainage, or lack of it, is the problem, something more drastic may be needed.

Dig a couple of trial holes and inspect.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.
"Have nothing in your garden that you don't know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
  • You'd need to dig holes and see if there could be a broken pipe or some blockages somewhere. Grass doens't become soggy suddenly so there must be a reason. Overflow from a neighbour might be the reason. That happened to me in my last garden.
I dont think feeding and seeding would help until the problem is sorted.
