Clematis Recommendation to Grow Into Rowan Tree

Hello

Nice to meet you all.

As per the title, I'm looking for a Clematis to grow into a mature Rowan tree in 'full hardy' Glasgow.

The spot is south West facing with sun from morning till around 5pm before it disappears behind the building.

The Native Rowan tree is in good health and has provided great colour to the garden this year. I'd guess it's over 8m in height. The roots are in a mostly full shade position around a red brick wall.

I think It could be an ideal chance to grow a beautiful clematis but not sure what is best suited as there are so many to choose from and lots to consider.

Anyone with recommendations would be most welcome.

Steve

  • Hi @WeekendPruner,
    And welcome to the forum.

Taylors Clematis have a really good reputation, and their website is great for getting ideas.
Probably best to start at looking at the height you want, and then take it from there to get some ideas of what you like.

I've no connection to the company ... but I have used them and had lovely plants.
I think many other forum members have used them too.

    Good luck with your project,

A Group 2 or 3 would be better than the smaller Group 1s, as the latter prefer drier conditions and wouldn't be so happy in with a rowan which needs moisture. The large flowered Group 3s need cut back in late winter/early spring, which might be more tricky depending on the access, so a Group 2 might be easier.
Plant a little bit away though - a foot to 18 inches or so.
The condition of your soil is also a factor, but there are loads which will suit. Thorncroft is another good outlet to look at for clems.  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I had a similar question, but in my case it was a crabapple rather than a Rowan tree. The clematis I chose was Huldine, seemingly perfect for the purpose. Mine has been in two years and is making good progress through the tree but shows no sign of flowering this year. I’m optimistic it will bloom next summer.

  • Thanks all for the replies.

I found Taylor's on my googlings. The website is a little tricky to navigate. I half thumbed out an email to ask them.
I saw that they 'don't deal with the public'...?

I will certainly wade through the links and see if I can find some contenders.

@WeekendPruner  😊 I know Taylors Clematis nursery is not open to the public and it states that on their website contacts page, but they certainly do ‘deal with the public’ … and very well too. I’ve used them quite a few times and will do so again. Highly recommended here 👍
