What is this please?

Could anyone identify this plant please as it popped up in the garden and I'm pretty sure I didn't plant it. I need to know if it's a friend or a foe!
Many thanks.

  • It looks a bit like Greater Celandine, which crops up all over my garden and has yellow flowers which seed everywhere. It has orangey-coloured lower stems and roots if you dig it up to look, but there are lots of plants with similar leaves.  If it is Celandine you could wait for it to flower to find out as it is quite pretty, but a pest if left to seed.

It reminds me of Scots lovage, Ligusticum scoticum.

  • Many thanks for your suggestions.

I think it’s the greater celandine,  don’t have that here but do have the lesser is a real pain,  it covers the garden in the winter.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Ooh thank you for that. I looked it up and think you are right and someone else suggested that too. I don't want it to take over my other plants so will dig it up. Thanks again.

I would call it a foe not a friend and remove it.
  • Thank you bcpathome. I am going to remove it asap. I don't want it to take over the garden.

Asarum, No I can't see any yellow sap but the leaves are so tiny as yet!

    Thanks both.

It's not Greater Celandine so don't remove it on that account. Is it coming out of the ground in more than one place, it looks as though it might be

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • It's limited to one small area about one foot square and is coming out of the ground in several places within that if you see what I mean. Can you hazard a guess what it might be if you don't think it's Greater Celandine?
