  • On dry, sandy soil, I tried many plants in an area under a large Acer for several years and always thought it looked a mess. These included Brunnera (which I do like @Busy-Lizzie!), Pachysandra, Japanese anemones, ferns and others.  Like @Pete.8, I decided to give Hakonechloa a go and copied a planting from the Knoll gardens gallery. I used H. macra aureola after asking for some advice here.  Here's what it looked like before and now:

    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

Here is my Brunnera with a hosta and an autumn anemone in shady, dry, sandy soil in Norfolk, 12th July this year.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
