My Cosmos tree!

I've been successful in growing cosmos for a few years from seed.
All bar one plant have been fine, I just wanted to share what I can my cosmos tree, it's at least 4ft high but has no flowers the rest are all fine!
Can't figure it out as they've all had the same start and location!

Take a look at Pete 8’s and Punkdoc’s replies on this thread; they’re the ones posted on August 8th

  • Thank you @BenCotto.
I'll be patient at this rate it's going to have fairy lights on in December 🤣
All about the light then ...

Maybe you'll be able to pick a bunch for the Christmas dinner table 😁

I have a couple of similar size (width-wise) that are sprawling all over the place and smothering proper flowering plants.
At last each one now has a single flower on it.
I can see more buds forming, but considering the space they have taken up all summer I think in future I'll consider them large foliage plants and use them at the back of the borders

  • Gosh I know what you mean!
I'll let you posted on if they ever flower but like you say everything else is dwarfed by it!
  • I can't believe I grew it from a tiny seed, the stalk is like a tree trunk!
I can't see any buds whatsoever, my other cosmos I'm dead heading each day and they are still going strong and providing lots of carder bees with much needed food, wonderful to see.

Thank you @BenCotto - you have provided my new bit of knowledge for today. I had no idea that the start of the flowering period of cosmos was determined by the sowing / germination time.

I'd given up sowing cosmos because they suddenly started flowering so late in the season - even though they'd always been ok before. After OH retired in 2018, we changed our holiday dates and I started delaying sowing seeds until late April as I wouldn't be there to look after them when they were wee babies. The seeds germinate nice & quickly at that time and  plants soon catch up in terms of size etc. However, the cosmos didn't flower until very late summer.

Thought I'd had some rogue batches of seed but your post and links explains all!
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
  • Except all of mine were planted at the same time it's just a couple of rogue ones !
